Cycling Through A Pandemic is a 350 page hardback book. Authored, designed, and edited by Jonathan Heard with Cian Byrne, featuring beautiful photography from cyclists around the world who captured images during their adventures in the pandemic years. From Malaysia to Mexico, the photos and words from 10 contributors paint a picture of what life on the road would have been like during this difficult time in history - and what lessons could be learnt.

Visual language

Each chapter marker features bold solid black pages with contrasting white font. Bold titles for all of the stories are set in the monospace font Roboto Mono. Creating consistency across various contributors is achieved through the use of a distinct visual language and communicating the severity of the time while providing an impactful aesthetic.

Visual identity

The layout of Cycling Through A Pandemic reflects the scale and impact of the global pandemic. Spreads portray striking multiple image grids, single portrait full-bleed images, and full-width horizontal images paired to create airy layouts that prioritise the photography from various contributors.

Dictated by a need to reflect the historic and monumental nature of the pandemic phenomenon. A hardback format was chosen to communicate this, the ambition to document this time with an object that would physically represent this was important.

Producing a book

Selecting the lithographic printing process for my book project, "Cycling Through a Pandemic," was a deliberate choice rooted in its exceptional quality and practicality for larger print quantities. Litho printing, with its capacity to reproduce intricate details and vibrant colors, provided the perfect canvas to visually capture the essence of cycling during challenging times. The method's consistency across pages ensured a polished and professional outcome, aligning with my vision for the project. Additionally, the cost-effectiveness of litho printing made it a strategic decision, allowing me to efficiently reach a broader audience with my reflections on cycling through the unique lens of a pandemic.
