Designing a soft and appealing brand identity for children's furniture brand.
A children's furniture project targeting the home market. Den was designed to be soothing, using scientific research to prove the effectiveness of sensory therapy for children. Den is a practical and ergonomic piece of sensory furniture, inspired by childhood memories of playing building forts and dens.
Logo design
Den's logo design tells a story about how chaotic feelings and can be soothed. The simple word mark within an organic boundary shape creates a cosy and natural feeling logo. The boundary shape can also be used as an asset and texture.
A haven
Den’s canopy physically blocks visual stimuli and creates a dark calming space for the user to be in. its acoustic foam composition actively insulates, isolates and absorbssound transmission.
Den’s roots act as a seat, providing much needed proprioceptive input. the soft cushioned based is designed to ground the user and provide “soft touch pressure” to calm and reassure the user. its two “hug blocks” simulate an intimate human embrace.
Natural materials and colours
Natural wool from the Isle of Bute and cotton fabrics were used because of their tactile and soothing characteristics. By using tactile materials and calming colours, den aims to lower the sensory arousal level of a child that may struggle with sensory input. essentially den is a product that evokes positive childhood memories whilst facilitating a calming, safe environment in the classroom.
The senses
“Very light touch alerts the nervous system, but deep pressure is relaxing and calming”
- Temple Grandin
Building a brand
Den's brand identity is based on the calming and soothing properties of the product itself. The brand assets reflect this through the use of a minimal style.
